QUESTION: It's hard to hear coaches for subs. So is there another way to hear them more effectively? ANSWER: On subs, ask the coach to have their subs stand at the half-way line of the field ready to go. Each time the ball is out of play the referee should look to the team side and see if there are any subs standing there. If it is a normal opportunity to sub and the team eligible to sub has playeres ready to come in, then hold the restart and ask the coach does he/she want to sub at this time. Normally they will say yes and you proceed with the sibstitutions.
The success of this depends on you as the referee setting the stage with each coach prior to the start of the match, preferably when you do the equipment check of his/her players. By telling the players and coach the proper method of sub'ing, you maintain control, and let them know they don't have to yell out, you'll be looking for the subs to be standing there and you'll ask when it's their opportunity to actually sub players.

QUESTION: I have just refed my first game and I have a few questions. I was making some mistakes I think on the throw-ins, how do you see the touchlines more clearly? ANSWER:
Now when it comes to seeing the touchlines, unfortunately we don't have control on how well the field is lined. When the lines are very faint, you need to be closer to the touchline and the play to be able to tell when the ball is actually out. It's easy when the ball travels several feet or yards out of play. It's harder when the ball is running along the line which requires the referee to be closer to the play to make that determination. When in doubt, sometimes the best thing to do is let them play until it is clear the ball is completely out.
