Leaders Code of Conduct

The purpose of the Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County is to provide youth soccer players the opportunity to develop soccer skills and to instill a passion for the game in our players. As a leader in SAC/HC - as coach, assistant coach, manager, or trainer - I understand the importance of the role I play in the lives of my players, and I accept the great responsibility this places on me. In carrying out these responsibilities, I accept the following code of conduct:

·         I will promote growth and development in a positive and supportive manner. I will nurture good sportsmanship and fair play by teaching and personally demonstrating my commitment to these virtues.

·         I will teach and demonstrate respect for the Laws of Soccer. I will insist on the highest respect for soccer officials by players, parents, and fans. I understand that dissent is contrary to the Laws of Soccer and that criticism of officials could destroy the game. I will abide by SAC/HC's rules and procedures.

·         As a head coach, I understand I am responsible for the behavior of my teams' assistants, parents and fans at League games.

·         I will respect the players on my team and on other teams. I understand that soccer is merely a game, and that players and coaches on other teams are my opponents, not my enemies. I will teach my team to appreciate how the variety and diversity of players in our club makes the club richer and more rewarding.

Coaches Guide to Red Cards, Yellow Cards and Accumulated Disciplinary Points

Coaches and other team officials. To emphasize the importance of the coach and other team

officials leading by example and acting as the role model for our youth players, coaches and other team officials are assessed a coaches' penalty. The point system applied to players also apply to coaches except that coaches are assessed a 5- point penalty for the first card they receive in each game. Thus, one caution totals 10 points; 5 for the caution and 5 for the penalty. A caution followed by an ejection (not a second yellow) totals 20 points.

When a coach/team official/spectator gets a red card or 2 yellow cards during a game, they are ejected from the game. A coach who receives a red card for a foul punishable by ejection (violent conduct, abusive language, second caution, etc.) must sit out the next league game and is assessed 15 cumulative disciplinary points. The coach/team official must be out of sight, out of sound before, during and after a game for which the coach/team official has been suspended and are sitting out.

A coach/team official/spectator will be considered ejected if any of the following situations occur during a match: 1) he/she is shown a red card, 2) he/she receives a second yellow card, 3) he/she is sent off without being shown a red card.  He/she shall IMMEDIATELY leave the game site and its vicinity.

If a coach/team official/spectator who has a yellow card is later ejected for a foul punishable by ejection, they are assessed 20 cumulative disciplinary points; 5- point penalty for the first card, 5 for the yellow and 10 for the ejection.

If a spectator is ejected, the Head Coach of the spectator’s team will be assessed fifteen (15) points, 5- point penalty, 10 for the ejection and will be suspended from the next SAC/HC game.

If a coach/team official/spectator receives a poor rating from the referees game report the Head Coach will be assessed 10 points; 5- point penalty and 5 for the poor rating. If a coach/team official/spectator receives an unacceptable rating from the referees game report the Head Coach will be assessed 15 points; 5- point penalty and 10 for the unacceptable rating.

Points assessed to coaches or trainers who are officials of more than one team apply only to the team against which the points were assessed. Similarly sit-out requirements apply to the team against which the points were earned. A coach or other team official who receives cautions and/or ejections totaling 20 points a season (fall or spring), must serve a one-game disciplinary suspension at the team's next SAC/HC game. A one game disciplinary suspension must also be served for every 10 points received thereafter. Rules for serving suspensions due to ejections also apply to disciplinary suspensions due to accumulated points.

At the end of the season, points do not carry over to the next season, but sit outs earned due to red cards or accumulated disciplinary points carry over and must be served the first game(s) of the next season.

Coaches and other team officials who change teams, the sit outs follow them and must be served with the new team.

If a coach or team official does not participate during the following season, the sit outs are owed when they returns to the league and must be served in the first game(s) of the season.

Red and yellow cards earned during tournaments, state cup games, scrimmages and indoor games do not count in a coach or team officials accumulated disciplinary point total.

It is important for coaches, players and team managers to keep good records of red cards and accumulated disciplinary points because SAC/HC may not automatically notify players or teams when sit outs are due. It is the responsibility of the team and team officials to ensure players serve their respective sit outs.. If sit outs are not served when they are due, the player, coach and team will face additional sit outs, and/or penalties which can include and forfeit of games played with players in violation.
